This quote from the book perfectly depicts the essence of The Storm. This debut novel from Laura Lexington is not like my usual read. At least not for the past months. And I appreciate the heads up from the author, it set me up for a neutral and open mind rather than going in expecting a full on romance just from the synopsis and ended up feeling let down.
The Storm was anything but a let down, though. It was different all right but a refreshing different for me. It's not the hot and heavy love story that I've been reading quite a lot of. Personally, I felt it's more of a life story -- a life with love, career, friendship, the works.
This book mostly focused on Jana Cook's life, the challenges that she's been experiencing from her personal life and especially, her professional life. I admire Laura Lexington for bravely tackling the issue of gender discrimination in the workplace in this story. Incorporating such an issue that's not common when reading indie books and writing it well deserves a good pat on the back.
Jana Cook is happily married to the love of her life, Andrew Cook. I can't say that they are a wealthy couple but they were well-off, what with Andrew being thrifty with their finances (which I say is a really good thing, by the way). Andrew is like a traditional husband, he wants his wife to just stay at home and care for him and their future children, but like a modern husband, he is also very supportive of what Jana wants and as long as she's happy working, then so be it. Jana works for Covington Company, a medical device manufacturer. She's a medical sales rep and she loves her job until she was transferred and everything spiraled from there.
I thankfully have not experienced discrimination but I felt so bad for Jana and sympathize with what she must be feeling. I wanted to slap those guys who think they are better than a woman and Lord forbid that that woman turns up pregnant, then she's even more replaceable. If Jana was stressed out after her transfer, it was pure torture after her co-workers found out she was expecting. And this is just one trial in Jana's life. There's also her childhood best friend, Grace who has bipolar disorder who she's also worried about.
Everything about The Storm, although fiction, touches the realistic aspects of life which I'm sure a lot others would be able to relate to.
So if you are looking for a sweet and sexy read, The Storm may not do it for you. Oh yes, it also has several sprinkles of sweet and sexy, but overall, I would say that this is more of a serious life story than anything else.
Stars: 4 stars
Recommended to: Readers looking for a deeper, serious story that some women can most likely relate too.
POV: First person. Female POV.
Series: Yes but interconnecting characters.
Extra Comment: I love the mystical feel during the last few scenes of the book and I got curious with Gavin's, Grace's husband's, story. I want the best for him!!!
