BLOG TOUR, REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: Fighting Silence (On The Ropes #1) - Aly Martinez

Title: Fighting Silence
Author: Aly Martinez
Series: On The Ropes (Standalone)
Release Date: February 23, 2015

Sound is an abstract concept for most people. We spend our lives blocking out the static in order to focus on what we believe is important. But what if, when the clarity fades into silence, it's the obscure background noise that you would give anything to hold on to?

I've always been a fighter. With parents who barely managed to stay out of jail and two little brothers who narrowly avoided foster care, I became skilled at dodging the punches life threw at me. Growing up, I didn’t have anything I could call my own, but from the moment I met Eliza Reynolds, she was always mine.  I became utterly addicted to her and the escape from reality we provided each other. Throughout the years, she had boyfriends and I had girlfriends, but there wasn't a single night that I didn’t hear her voice.

You see, meeting the love of my life at age thirteen was never part of my plan. However, neither was gradually going deaf at the age of twenty-one.

They both happened anyway.

Now, I'm on the ropes during the toughest battles of my life.

Fighting for my career.

Fighting the impending silence.

Fighting for her.

Every night, just before falling asleep, she sighs as a final conscious breath leaves her.

I think that's the sound I'll miss the most.

“No matter how bad I fuck things up, we make this work. Forever.”

Aly Martinez, you did it again and fighting silence? I want to shout at the rooftops at how much this book surprised me!!! I’m not surprised that Aly Martinez wrote yet another fascinatingly emotional story with Till and Eliza. I’m not also not surprised that I thoroughly enjoyed and devoured Fighting Silence. I guess what I was surprised about was how fast-paced yet captivating it was at the same time. I honestly didn’t get much from the synopsis that was posted, you can say I went in sort of blind into the book but it was one blind moment that I do not regret having experienced.

Till Page and Eliza Reynold’s story began when they were only thirteen years old. It was an unconventional friendship between them at first, only having their moments in private, away from other people. Not because one is popular and the other is not. Both of them are each other’s escape from their reality. When they’re together, nothing else matters. It doesn’t matter that both of their parents are irresponsible and neglect their children. It doesn’t matter that they are poor and can barely eat and pay rent. What matters is the friendship that they have, that the short moments they spend with each other gives them the strength they need in their young minds to go on with life, that it’s not all that bad after all. It was a sad and raw friendship and it was real, rare and genuine.

Their friendship lasted for years and when high school was done and Eliza was off to college and Till was to stay in town, their last night together was spent showing how much they love each other and not just as friends. That part had me smiling and tearing up all at once. it was a touching scene and I just wanted to hug them both. But that didn’t last long. And I absolutely love how the author weaved their story in a way that it spreads out into a few years after and then several months after that and still manage to be flawless. It was like the past years and months only happened yesterday yet the emotional impact still gutted me at time. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL.

I can personally relate to Eliza in a way, he loved Till since they were young but she was okay to be just friends with him while they live their lives separately. She was always there for him, cared for him, and spends whatever free time she has with him but it wasn’t like Till was just using her or that she’s a doormat or a pushover. She just have a huge golden heart. But a person can only take so much hot and cold, and when Till started to freely show deeper feelings for her and still won’t take things further into reality, Eliza put her foot down and stood her ground. That’s my kind of girl! Knowing when enough is enough and when to know to ask for more and not settle for less than what she deserve. But Eliza being Eliza, she didn’t let what happened between her and Till to affect her relationship with Tills younger brothers, Flint and Quarry (who are both extremely adorable, by the way), she was still wants to help out and be a sister to them. That was easy enough since they live in the same apartment building, Till’s being just a floor above hers.

The Page brothers work in Slate’s gym, you remember Slate? Yes, that same Slate for Among The Echoes. Boxing was where Till was good at. Boxing helped him out when he was younger, it disciplined him and gave him direction in life. He believes that’s the only thing he’s good at and what he can do for as long as he’s healthy and strong. But something’s going on with him that’s deeper than being hot and cold with Eliza. He knows what he wants, he knows he loves her, he knows what she wants from him, for them, and it’s not because he’s indecisive that’s why he can’t do what Eliza asks of him, but because he’s scared. He’s scared things will change and that he will end up losing her not just as a lover but as a friend as well. I wanted to just push Till to do it but I feel his vulnerability and all I wanted to do was just cheer him on and tell him “Dude, you can do it!”. It doesn’t help that he’s also keeping a secret, one that will affect not just him but his family, his brothers and Eliza, as well. Fighting Silence? This title made me think it was all about the silence in their lives, the loneliness they felt before they found each other that day, but what it actually was broke my heart. Aly Martinez is a genius writing love stories that will break your heart with sadness and pain and still make you googly-eyed and dreamy sigh and want to be in love all over again.

Till was a very protective guy, and I’m not talking about the alpha caveman type, I’m talking about the do everything he can to provide for his loved ones type of protectiveness. He wants to protect them from pain, from suffering, he wants to provide security for their future. Till was a tough boxer but he’s a real softy inside. Shh. Don’t tell anyone! I love how he loves his brothers and Eliza. I love how he is an emotional guy. I love how he prioritizes his family. If stepping up for his brothers didn’t seal the deal for me, or when he finally used the door with Eliza, then it was the the decision he made to quit what he loves doing for him and for the Page family.

Fighting Silence is a complete treat, another unforgettable work by Aly Martinez and it’s safe for me to say that whatever Aly writes, I will read. She’s now on my still short-list of “auto-read” authors and if you haven’t read any of her books yet, you can start now. Each book, each story, each characters get better and better and better.

BLOG TOUR, REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: A Desperate Man (Volume #2) - Ella Frank & Brooke Blaine

Title: A Desperate Man: Volume 2
Authors: Ella Frank Brooke Blaine
Series: A Desperate Man
Release Date: February 15, 2015

Illusions — we all create them.
For some it’s to project an impressive image to a prospective employer; for others it’s to attract the eye of another.
My illusion is a bit more...complicated.
Years in the making, my secret has the potential to bite me in the ass. And not in the way I typically enjoy.
Sex.
As women, we’re judged for reveling in the same carnal pleasures that men do, but I’ve never been shy about my voracious appetite.
Now, I’m under no illusions that I’ll find love with any of my one night stands.
After all, I have one rule — no repeats — but it’s a rule that’s becoming harder to follow since Evan James came back into my life.
Did I say back into my life?
My name is Reagan Spencer, and you may think you know me, but...
How well do we really know anyone?

“Blondie,” he called out, and lifted his hand in a wave.
She dashed over, out of the rain, and lowered the umbrella as she came to a stop in front of him. His eyes automatically zoomed in on her plumped-up breasts, and the first thought that ran through her mind was, Score one for me. Slightly juvenile, perhaps, but a much more appropriate thought than the ones she’d been having prior to getting out of the cab.
“I wasn’t sure you’d brave the weather tonight. Thought I might end up going stag.”
Shaking the umbrella, Reagan brought her eyes up to his and let her mouth curl into a wicked smile.
“Please, I’m at my best when wet.”
Evan’s eyes heated as he seemed to bite his tongue. “Already pulling out the big guns, I see.”
“Oh no, honey, I haven’t even started. I’m saving my true arsenal for the men who count.”
Evan cocked his head to the side, but didn’t appear offended as a small smile tugged his lips. “I see how it is.”
“Do you?”
“Yes. You’re gonna go all sex kitten, and I’m going to be stuck asking about feelings and shit.”
As they moved toward the door, and Evan reached for the handle and pulled it open, Reagan stopped and looked up at him.
“You do have feelings, don’t you, Evan?”
He leaned down until his mouth was by her ear and whispered, “I’m having a very strong feeling right now.”
Reagan’s stomach flipped, and she ignored the urge to flirt back with the man grinning at her, instead scoffing before patting his arm. “Well, you should make sure to tell that to the first young lady you sit down with.”
“If she’s a lady, I’m thinking she won’t appreciate that particular feeling.”
“Then what does that make me?”
Brushing past him, she felt his hand against her hip through the tight material of her dress. She didn’t have to have eyes in the back of her head to know he was staring at her ass.
“That makes you fucking dangerous.”

ARC received from the authors for an honest review

“Sometimes we have no idea what we need until someone gives it to us.”

What the heck are you trying to do with me, Ella and Brooke?! A Desperate Man: Volume 2 is well, the second part of the A Desperate Man serial, and the continuation of Reagan and Evan’s insanely crazy, sexy, explosive lives.

In Volume 1, we met Evan James. The playboy. The sexy man who’s all about the sex and the luxurious lifestyle. The desperate man who desperately wants to turn his life around. Get a job. A decent job to back the lifestyle he’s living. Ella Frank and Brooke Blaine introduced us to Evan James and Reagan Spencer in a captivating way that left me curious for more. And more I got.

Even with how things went on in Volume 1, I was left kind of clueless as to where the story would turn. And this is new to me because once I get the the feeling that the story will take me on a guessing tailspin, my mind would come up with a handful of different guesses until the big secret is revealed which always ends up in me being “less surprised” but still loved it or a lot surprised and freaking out. But wow, Ella and Brooke didn’t leave me with enough breadcrumbs for me to come up with the decent guess and so when I started Volume 2, I was surprised, pleasantly surprised, with where the story was going. We’ve met Evan James, now it’s time to get into Reagan Spencer’s head.

We met Reagan Spencer as the confident, tough, and sexy “Blondie” who Evan can’t get his mind and lust off of, the same “Blondie” who also happens to be his boss. I saw Reagan as a woman who speaks her mind and is confident about herself, whether in her career or her personal life. I admire that Reagan. However, now that I got to be inside her head and read the story from her perspective, I’ll say I more than admire her. This Volume made her feel more “real” to me because I saw another side of her. Vulnerable, emotional, and even though her exterior was as tough as nails, she really is a softy at heart. Even with all these, she really can keep up with the seduction play with Evan. You want a minx? Reagan is a picture perfect of innocence and sex rolled into one beautiful package.

Since this is from Reagan’s POV, this presents new and more in-depth take on the storyline. Secrets were presented, pasts were revealed and now there are enough breadcrumbs for me to go through to make guesses and assumptions on my own while I (im)patiently wait for Volume 3! I am captivated by how Ella Frank and Brooke Blaine are writing Evan and Reagan. The twists so far are blindsiding but totally adds up to the intrigue and I always love it when authors struck me dumb with how flawless they turn the surprises from one direction to the other. This was how A Desperate Man: Volume 2 was for me. A surprising, I-need-more-now-please-don’t-keep-me-waiting-too-long read that I know will keep shocking me until the end!

Stars: 5 stars
Recommended to: Serial novel fan? This will rock your socks off! Looking for your first serial read? A Desperate Man will leave you wanting desperately for more!
Series: Yes. Serial.
POV: Third person. Female POV.
Extra Comment: Volume 3, where is it?!?!

About Brooke

You could say Brooke Blaine was a book-a-holic from the time she knew how to read; she used to tell her mother that curling up with one at 4 a.m. before elementary school was her ‘quiet time.’ Not much has changed except for the espresso I.V. pump she now carries around and the size of her onesie pajamas.
Her first solo novel, a romantic comedy, is due out in early 2015, but first, she thought she’d write a raunchy story with her best friend that would scar her conservative southern family for life.
If you’d like to get in touch with her, she’s easy to find - just keep an ear out for the Rick Astley ringtone that’s dominated her cell phone for ten years.

4.5 I Love Colt Stars
ARC received  for an honest review

“It’s not about the time we’ve had together; it’s all about what he has given me in those moments.”

I cannot believe I waited until the 3rd book in the Southern Boys Series to start reading it. I think C.A. Harms did a wonderful job in writing Colt and Alexis’ story that is fast-paced yet manage to deliver the emotions with full impact. Since this was my first book in the series (I have started and loved Forgiving Reed after I finished with Loving Colt), I didn’t know what I expected with the story but it ended up with me searching through my Kindle to read the rest of the books.

Loving Colt is the almost whirlwind story of a young single parent Alexis and a still bachelor Colt. The two met in while Alexis was on the road with her daughter, Maddi. Running away from her abusive boyfriend with not enough money for food until they reach her parents’ home, Colt was a stranger who generously paid for their meal during their stopover in Georgia. From that night, it seemed like everything happened to bring them together… closer to each other. It was like fate was gently steering Alexis and Maddi in Colt and his family’s way, that they will be the one to save her and vice versa.

“This was home I had found when I wasn’t even looking for one. This was where we belonged.”

Because fate was in control, Alexis and Maddi ended up staying longer in Georgia than what Alexis has planned but it ended up being what was best for them. Everyone in that town was kind and supportive and they have grown to be friends to Colt and his friends and family. How the build up of their love story was a refreshing experience. I’m not against insta-love and in a way, Colt and Alexis’ was sort of “insta”, however, I love the fact that it was not just about them and that they didn’t act on it right away. There was a build up from beings strangers to somewhat friends to being attracted to each other until they have both acted on it. I love that other characters were involved in their story. Their friends and family supported, loved, and guided them.

“After everything she had gone through, I strived to make her feel desirable and wanted. She needed to know that she deserved more than what she had been dealt. I planned on making sure she knew what it felt like to be somebody’s all.”

Alexis was hesitant at first which was understandable with the experience she just ran away from but that didn’t last long and I have no complaints about that, it didn’t feel like the author rushed into things for Alexis and Colt’s relationship. C.A. Harms took the time with their chemistry and did great in not dragging it for too long that it would be plain frustrating. Colt was understanding throughout all this, he stood by and didn’t rush what he was feeling. He became a friend. He didn’t push her but with his actions, it was obvious he cared not just for Alexis but also her daughter. Actions speak louder than words, right? I believe that most of the time and Colt was a good example of a “man of action”.

And once they talked about their feelings and their relationship, it was all rainbows and butterflies for me! Well, except for that part where I held my breath. Loving Colt is an easy, feel-good read even though that first part had me teary-eyed and sad, the story didn’t focus too much on the bad but the good instead and after all the emotional books I’ve read lately, this was a refreshingly good surprise. I will definitely read Finding Gavin now!

Stars: 4.5 stars
Recommended to: Everyone looking for a sweet romance with a touch of drama in it. Just a touch. Loving Colt is overall a happy reading experience for me.
Series: Yes. Standalone with interconnected characters.
POV: First person. Dual POV.
Extra Comment: If you’ve read Forgiving Reed (I’d like to say both earlier books but I still haven’t read Finding Gavin as of this writing), Loving Colt is less emotional but I loved it just the same!

BLOG TOUR, REVIEW & GIVEAWAY: Unexpected Fate (Hope Town #1) - Harper Sloan

Title: Unexpected Fate
Series: Hope Town
Author: Harper Sloan
Release Date: February 17, 2015

Have you ever felt like you were living your life for a future that was predetermined? Like there was some bigger picture you just prayed you would someday see clearly? That picture has been crystal clear to me since I was old enough to recognize it for just what it was.

Or I should say recognize him for who he was.

I’ve loved Cohen Cage since I was a small child. He’s been my everything for the last twenty-two years. I’ve loved him through every girlfriend he’s ever brought home. Through his college years and then mine. I’ve loved him through two deployments. And ever since the day I told him how I felt, he’s acted like I’m a stranger.

My name is Danielle Reid, and it’s time for me to get my man.

Our future is an unexpected fate, and no matter what our parents, siblings, and friends say…it’s going to be worth every second of the fight to make it happen.

5 When I Close My Eyes Stars
ARC received for an honest review

"Ready or not, Cohen. Ready. Or. Not."

It's melancholic reading a very grown-up Cohen Cage, or all Corps Security kids for that matter. Having read all the CS series since it's started, I felt like I became a part of the family. Okay, at least I feel like a neighbor and I'm friends with all of them. Reading all the problems that the older CS generation faced and braved until they have their happily ever after was an emotional ride for me. Now, having read the first book of the new generation CS had me all smiling and a tad bit emotional. I felt like I've grown with them, too.

"Jaw porn. With Cohen, it's a very real thing."

From the adorably silly and energetic Cohen Cage, more than 20 years later... He's now a very confident, dangerously sexy, and insanely protective Cohen Cage. It's amusing how I used to laugh at all his childish quirks and wit and now drool over how sexy he is. Because he is. He has grown into a man that I imagine Greg Cage's son would be -- strong, loving and determined. I did want to smack him upside down a few times though. I forgot to add stubborn to his repertoire. If you've read the CS books, you're familiar with some extremely teasing scenes that Harper Sloan wrote for Cohen and Dani. And you also got a sneak peek of Dani Reid's feelings for Cohen even at an early stage. Want to know what Cohen did with it? Nada. Nothing. Hence, the reason I wanted to smack him and then kiss the pain away at the same time. It is really sweet and right that he didn't do anything when Dani was barely legal. I'm sure Axel Reid will not be happy about his 15 year old daughter being in a relationship with anyone. But years after that, and with how close their families are, I want to scream "TRY AND I'M SURE YOU CAN MAKE IT WORK! COME ON YOU GUYS!"

Well, of course, Harper Sloan teased us some more and that's actually what I enjoyed about Dani and Cohen's story. The emotional ride it took me in, all the screaming in my head and the snickers and giggles I kept inside me all are worth it because it felt... More. All the teasing that Dani and Cohen did to each other, the sweetness and care they showed for each other, and their love... it was obvious even when Axel was threatening Dani's prom date with a gun. The time Cohen cared for Dani when she was sick, the friendship Dani gave Cohen even when secretly she wanted to just jump him and have her way with him, these seemingly small gestures made up a huge ball of love between those two.

But what's a Harper Sloan book without making me cry? I don't know, really. One may think that Harper's books are all just oozing sex and yumminess especially if you just look at the covers. But no, no, no. Each book of hers brought me to tears and I'm not just talking about the sappy kind of tears, I'm saying emotional, sad, heartbreaking tears too. And although Unexpected Fate did not make me ugly cry (thank you, Harper!), there were lots of tears shed by me. I'm such an emotional reader, I know. There was also a bit of suspense that had me guessing "WHO IS DOING THOSE THINGS TO DANI?"

"It was unexpected, baby, but it was fate. It's our unexpected fate, and I have no doubt in my mind that this happened at the perfect time for us..."

Unexpected Fate is a full ride experience and if you are like me who absolutely enjoys family series, you wouldn't want to miss this one. If you haven't read the Corps Security series, you would want to after you finish with UF. This book is a standalone in a series but I promise, you will get the complete emotional package if you read about the first generation.

Stars: 5 stars
Recommended to: Everyone who loved the Corps Security men, you will love the kids too! Or even if you're new to the series, Dani and Cohen will make you fall in love with them and I'm sure you would want to read the first books also.
Series: Yes. Standalone.
POV: First person. Dual POV.
Extra Comment: I look forward to the rest of the (not really) kids' stories!!! Lee seems wonderful!

Harper lives in small town Georgia just a short drive from her hometown of Peachtree City. She (and her 3 daughters) enjoy ruling the house they dubbed 'Estrogen Ocean', much to her husband’s chagrin. Harper has a borderline unhealthy obsession with books; you can almost ALWAYS find her with her eReader attached. She enjoys bad reality TV and cheesy romantic flicks. Her favorite kind of hero--the super alpha kind!

Harper started using writing as a way to unwind when the house went to sleep at night; and with a house full of crazy it was the perfect way to just relax. It didn't take long before a head full of very demanding alphas would stop at nothing to have their story told.
