"Never sell yourself short and settle for someone out of comfort or obligation."
I admit, the cover drew me in and made me read the description of the book and wanting to read something sweet at the moment, I clicked on "Read Now". Friends to lovers? Unexpected "surprise"? Oh, I'm in alright!
Laura Lee is a new to me author that's why I know to keep my expectations in check so I can keep an open mind about the story. Deal Breakers lived up to the "something sweet" that I was looking for. I was actually enjoying and found myself impressed with how the author introduced and built up the foundation of Devyn and Riley's relationship. They met during the first weeks of their Freshman year and each year took one chapter leading up to the "after". It may seem short but I liked how it was written that way, it was short but gave us enough sneak peeks on how Devyn and Riley's friendship is.
However, somewhere along the way, the story lost me. Something went wrong that made me think, "What's happening right now? Really?!". It felt rushed than the first chapters when it was supposed to be the "after" chapters should take more time. I couldn't connect with Devyn anymore and Riley's charm dipped from 100 to 50. Nathan saved the day, though. I liked how cute he was and how I can easily imagine a mini-Riley.
Overall, this is not such a bad read. I just hoped there had been more "falling in love" scenes rather than "already in love".
Stars: 3 stars
