ARC received from E.M. Abel for an honest review
"All my dreams, my life, my love had been reduced to liquid and ash."
This book just took me on a wild ride! Now, I have the first 3 books of E.M. Abel waiting on my Kindle for me to read, but Liquid & Ash is the first book I've actually read by the author and can I just say how hypnotic her writing is?
Since E.M. Abel is basically a "new to me" author, I have no idea on what to expect from this book. I have been on a reading slump lately and can't quite find that book that catches my interest right off the bat. Liquid & Ash pulled me out of that funk with how entranced I was just from reading the preface. I was instantly intrigued, curious on what went wrong in Penny's life and how she picks herself up from that. I love the author's writing style, how she tells Penny's story touched me even if most of the time I couldn't understand her at all.
I may also be one of the odd people who liked Derek. *shields face* I really felt bad for him at first, and then slowly, the author reveals Derek's other side and I just shook my head at myself because I still like him. Sure, he has made a huge mistake but after everything has been said and done, I'm on Team Derek than Penny and maybe that's why no matter how sexy Brandon is, I couldn't connect with him like I wanted to and even more so when he is with Penny. At some point, I felt like Brandon is just hot fling or a rebellious phase for Penny.
Overall, I liked Liquid and Ash basically because the writing and the story got to me instantly. There were some 5-star feels for me but at the same time, I felt like there were a lot of things going on and they didn't build too much "oomph" for me. I'm still not sold on what happened to Penny and Derek's marriage.
Stars: 3 stars
