5 Beyond The Consequences Stars
ARC received from the author for an honest review
Just when I thought I saw the last of the Rawlingses and their extended families, I got to read A Peek Beyond The Consequences -- a novella originally included in the Breathless anthology. It was sweet, mysterious, and a happy read. I wanted more. And then a full-length of the "peek" was already in the works and I loved Aleatha Romig even more for giving the readers of the series more than a peek of what happens after all the revelations from Revealed.
Beyond The Consequences live up to its title. It's the continuation of Tony, Claire, Nichol and the rest of their friends' and families' lives after the bittersweet ending of the 4th book, Revealed: The Missing Years, where secrets were unraveled and emotions were so high I was mostly holding my breath while reading.
And even though the last book ended with a happily ever after, we were left wondering about some things still. The mystery, the intrigue, I'm sure I was not the only one who asked "Oh my gosh, who's this causing threat now?!". Right? That question was answered in this book but that's not all there is. There's also Phil, the very loyal bodyguard and friend of the Rawlings. I was so happy to see a side story for him. He deserved it! It was wonderful to read Phil's POV not just about his job for Claire, Tony, and Nichol, but a deeper peek in his personal life, too. It made me understand him and admire him even more for the job that he does! Now, I would love to read about Eric. Hmm... that would be exciting!
But let's not forget that mysterious threat from before. The Rawlings thought it's done, their family is safe from people wanting to destroy them, but then something suddenly pops out of nowhere and threatens what they have. I was suddenly back to guessing and making assumptions like what I did for most of this series. Unlike with the early book though, the threats were identified easily in BTC. It wouldn't be "beyond" the consequences if it's just going to be about another danger, right?
What's more for the Rawlings family? What future are they planning? How is Claire and her mental and emotional state after all these years? How are their friends and family? Is there anything exciting after everything they've all been through in the past?
I love how my mind and my emotions get an exercise from reading Aleatha's books. She's an author who keeps you guessing, keeps you on the edge of your seat, makes you smile and maybe even make you shed a tear or two from either happiness or heartbreak but she always deliver an amazing story with each book. It's no different with this one too. BTC has a complete recipe for a suspenseful, heartwarming reading experience.
I loved reading Tony and Nichol together, their relationship as father-daughter is so bonded and knowing the Tony from the past, it melted my heart how much love and protectiveness he's showing not just for his wife but their daughter as well. Like what Claire said, Tony didn't change, he just finally came out of his shell. He was always meant to be the caring, loving, protective, albeit sometimes a bit intense, person that he is now. And I couldn't agree more with Claire. Their two broken selves fit each other to make a complete and flawless piece together.
And while I was both happy and sad to finish this book, the author made up for it with her "Author's Note" at the end. I was hopeful and smiling like a loon after that.
