Synopsis
Jayne Griffin isn’t looking for Mr. Right. She’s looking for Mr. RTFN and a toe-curling good time. She’s got the brains, the powerful job as a futures broker, and thanks to a makeover and a thin book of dating advice, the confidence to turn any man’s head.
Malcolm Black notices his high school crush, Jayne, from the stage of her company’s work party. His adolescent feelings for her died beneath months of abuse at the hands of bullies. Abuse that was Jayne’s fault. Though this scorching hot studio musician is unrecognizable as the band geek he used to be, the hurt still lives inside him, and he hatches a plan: Seduce Jayne into falling in love with him, and then shatter her heart.
The white-hot chemistry between them is a pleasant surprise. It all goes so smoothly until Feelings start to develop... and that invitation to their ten year high school reunion lands in their inboxes.
Jayne wants the perfect lover. Malcolm wants revenge. But you know what they say about The Best Laid Plans...

“The thrill for him wasn’t in the chase; it was in the having.”
Well this one isn’t what I thought it would be. The Best Laid Plans is about a guy who has been hurt so badly in his high school days because of a comment gone wrong by a girl he was trying to impress with with his music talent and after that day, things were never the same again.
Going into this book, I knew it would be about revenge of sorts. It seemed interesting and got me wondering what happened 12 years ago to Malcolm and Jayne for Malcolm to still harbor those feelings after a very long time. Then surprise! Reading the flashback on the things that Malcolm went through before, my heart broke for him. I saw him as a young boy -- kind-hearted, easily taken advantage of and sweet and reading about the things he felt and experienced made me ache with him too. Boy am I glad I’ve never experienced anything like it (or treated anyone badly) when I was in high school.
With Malcolm’s experience, I would have thought Jayne was one of the “mean girls” but she wasn’t. Jayne was pretty much like him except for the harsh treatments, she was smart but just blends in or almost disappears in the crowd, not someone who stands out and leads a “pack”. That left me wondering what she could have done to Malcolm when they were sort of on the same boat in high school. Her part in Malcolm’s worst experience in high school was extremely sad. It was unintentional but led to painful consequences and I think that part put me off.
12 years after that horrible day, Malcolm saw Jayne and wants her to feel as bad as he did years before. He wanted to crush her, make her feel pain, break her, because that’s how he felt then. Those pain did some good things for him too, he started taking care of himself better and improved his skills. He’s now a successful musician, he’s built and knows self-defense, he’s sexy and charming and he can have any woman he wants. The new improved Malcolm has the advantages to make his move on Jayne.
What started as a revenge plan turned into a stream of hot sexual activities and complicated feelings.
This book really started out intriguing and then sex, sex, and lots of sex with glimpses of the past and Jayne and Malcolm’s emotions.
They’ve been through a lot in their lives after high school. They each made a good life for themselves. I love how Malcolm used his past to better himself instead of drowning in self-pity or in anger. And I mostly enjoyed going through Malcolm and Jayne’s story with them. It was sweet and hot.
What happens when his best laid plan turned out to be the opposite? If they found love and comfort instead of revenge and pain? Will they be able to let go of the past and move forward?
Stars: 3.5 to 4 stars!

About The Author
Tamara Mataya is currently a librarian; she lurked there for so long recommending books to patrons and shushing people, that she suspects they only hired her so it would be less creepy. Now she’s armed with a name tag, and a thin veneer of credibility. She’s also a musician with synaesthesia – which isn't an issue until someone plays a wrong note, which makes her want to squirm inside out. It makes for a good live show.
