ARC received from T.M. Frazier for an honest review
"But he chose me to be his family, and I chose him to be mine."
Absolutely f&$KING STUNNING! I was stunned by the end of King and Doe's story that I ended up being speechless and staring at the ceiling until I fell asleep. How do I even start to review something like this? A truly gritty story that would have you feeling sympathetic to fictional characters, feel your mind working overtime questioning everything and try coming up with possible answers, have your heart and nerves like they're about to burst with emotions and suspense, how to review with all these feelings not being a way to spoil the story for every one else?
This is the first time I'm meeting King, my first read from T.M. Frazier. I honestly didn't know what to expect, I just opened my mind to all the possibilities based on the synopsis. And boy was I in for a great reading experience! This book has everything I would want in a story: intriguing storyline, kick-ass and still lovable characters, and writing that leaves me hanging on to its every page.
"My life had been moving forward at nothing short of full fucking speed ahead ever since the day I'd met Preppy. I'd loved living outside the law. I fed off the fear in the eyes of those who crossed me. The only thing I'd ever regretted was getting caught."
Brantley King, or King, has been living it rough since even before he was a teenager. Tough and too mature for his age, he made friends with an unexpected kid named Samuel (aka Preppy). Together, they made plans on how they can conquer the world. Not. Seriously, they made plans on how they can get out of the shithole that is their homes. Since King ended up going to prison, it's safe to guess that those plans weren't exactly law-abiding ones. They made it work though, they survived, and they have always had each other's backs. I love the unconventional friendship of Preppy and King. One of my most favorite things about this book was reading Preppy with King, Preppy with Doe, and really, anything Preppy. He brings such laughter but still have that criminal edge to him. His wit goes well with King's seriousness.
"No wallet. No ID. No money. No possessions of any kind.
No fucking memory."
And of course, there's Doe. Or Pup. The mysterious girl who walked in on King and walked in King's room. The first parts of Doe's POV was difficult for me to read probably because even having not experienced what she's experiencing, I felt for her. I felt her desperation. I felt her struggles. I felt the choosing between the lesser of two evils struggle that she has to made. Amidst all of these things, Doe came out strong and this is exactly why I admired her and how the author made her out to be. She's desperate and struggling but she's fierce and tough, too. No whiney, poor-little heroine for me.
"Oh, pup. How much fun this is going to be."
When that desperation led Doe to King, it wasn't love at first sight. It might be lust at first sight for King, but how their first meeting went wasn't sparks and combustible chemistry. At least not at first. It was hold-my-breath-oh-my-gosh-what-will-happen-now intense. I may have had a little nervous breakdown reading what was happening in that room. After all that craziness, however, came cupid. King's lust at first sight with Doe started to be more. More so that he doesn't know what to do with her or with himself and how he was feeling. King and Doe's relationship full-on started with thrill, King's anger and Doe's questions not just about her and her past but what's next for her with King.
Even though I am a self-proclaimed romance junkie, complete with cliche rainbows and butterflies Epilogues, reading King and Doe's story, even though it's dark and challenging, are so worth my puffy eyes the next day. T.M. Frazier just did a wonderful job writing such an intense story that will hook you right from the start.
Angst, action, steam, mystery, and drama (yes, there is drama), this book got me holding my breath and sniffling and jonesing for the next book already!
