The 27 Club is unlike any other Kim Karr novel that I've ever read. Can I finish this review with just that statement? No? Okay then.

The premise, the synopsis of The 27 Club is a beautiful mystery that hooked me from the start. The only thing I'm sure of when I started reading this was that I'm sure this is another story that will touch my heart, in what way, I still have to figure out as I read along but after reading it -- damn, this is so much more than what I thought it would be. Do you have any ideas on what this would be about from the title and the synopsis? If you do, brace yourself for a surprisingly stunning and somehow emotional twists and turns from Zoey and Nate's story.

Zoey's life has been norma, somewhat routine and boring, her only family and the 2 people she cares and loves the most in the world are her Mimi and her brother, Zachary. But with Mimi gone and then Zach's death, she took it hard. Add to that that now, she's always worried about the 27 club unlike before. She now lives everyday in fear and detached not just from any kind of relationship with people, but also with things and tasks such as planning and making decisions about the future.

When Zoey flew to Miami to sort out her brother's things, she discovered that Zach has been keeping things from her and his best friend, Nate. Lies, secrets, Zoey couldn't let things go. She had to know. She wanted to know. So she spent her time in Miami doing that. She wanted answers and she found ways to get those answers but that's not the only thing she got. She got Nate Hanson, too.

Nate Hanson, Zach's best friend, Zoey's fantasy come true. At first, Kim got me frustrated with Nate. It's obvious how attracted he was with Zoey yet at the same time, I'm also curious as to why he felt the need to pull away from that attraction. I understand Zach told him off before, but how he was acting felt like it was so much more than that and then it happened... Kim Karr sure know how to turn what a seemingly simple answer would be to a surprising twist that's not too over the top but still managed to get the "Oh, that's why!" reaction from me. And there were a lot of "Oh gosh, really?" moments for me in here, too!

So why 4 and not 5 stars? I enjoyed everything about this book, it got emotions out of me that would normally tick me off but because in this case it made for an effective storytelling, I'm putting that under pros instead of cons. The premise was unique and this book was not just about love but about living life to the fullest. I just felt like holding off on that 1 star for those few parts where the scenes/dialogues didn't work too well with me. Since those were just few and didn't really impact how the story developed and ended or how I enjoyed reading the not just Nate and Zoey but also Zach.

I read books to get away from the real world sometimes or when I'm craving some emotions that reading books give me, but with The 27 Club, Kim Karr also provided an inspiration for me and overall, this is what it was for me. A story about family, life and love that Kim Karr's writing turned into an intriguing story that will have you guessing and emotional.
